This is how a Mordent is notated in the score with a short squiggle above the stave

It may sometimes be referred to as an Upper Mordent, and here is how it should be played:

Click here to hear how it should sound:

(Upper) Mordent (MP3)

In contrast a Lower or Inverted Mordent is notated like this, with the same squiggle for the Upper Mordent, but with a vertical line through it;

and is played in this way

(Lower or Inverted) Mordent (MP3)

You may come across a Mordent Trill also called a Prall Trill

You might well have heard of a Schleifer which is German for a Slide and includes a Mordent Trill or a Prall Trill at the end..

So, this is how a Prall Trill is notated in music

and this is how it should be played

Prall Trill (MP3)
